How fast do trains go in Norway, and is there any high-speed rail?

Top speeds on the Gardermoen and Follo lines, Vy's regional trains and real travel times.

Short answer

Flytoget's airport express trains are approved for 210 km/h on the line to Oslo Airport, which Flytoget calls Norway's first high-speed railway. Newer local and regional trains in Eastern Norway have a top speed of 200 km/h, and the Follo Line between Oslo and Ski allows 200 km/h. Long journeys still take time: Oslo to Bergen takes about seven hours.

Why

  1. Flytoget received permanent approval in 2003 to run its Airport Express Trains at 210 km/h on a double-track high-speed line, the first of its kind in Norway.
  2. Norske tog lists a maximum speed of 200 km/h for its Class 74 trains, and gives 200 km/h as the maximum permitted speed for local and regional trains in Eastern Norway.
  3. Jernbanedirektoratet gives the Follo Line, opened in December 2022, a maximum permitted speed of 200 km/h, and it halved the travel time between Oslo and Ski from 22 to 11 minutes.

Details

The Follo Line runs 22 km from Oslo S to Ski, mostly through the Blix Tunnel, which is Norway's longest railway tunnel. Flytoget takes 19 minutes from Oslo Airport to Oslo Central Station. On the Bergen Line, the trip of almost 500 km takes about 6.5–7.5 hours, so the average speed is well under 100 km/h.

Tip

To ride on Norway's first high-speed line, take Flytoget between Oslo Airport and Oslo S, a 19-minute trip.

What may differ

The top speeds apply only where the track allows them: 210 km/h on the line to Oslo Airport and 200 km/h on the Follo Line, while speeds on other parts of the network depend on the line.
