Why

  1. Visit Norway describes the Bergen Line as almost 500 kilometres of railway, crossing Hardangervidda, Northern Europe's largest mountain plateau.
  2. Vy gives a journey time of about 6.5 to 7.5 hours from Oslo to Bergen, with 6–7 departures a day.
  3. Visit Bergen states that the flight takes under one hour and that there are more than 20 flights every day.

Details

Visit Bergen also lists Vy's express bus VY450, with a journey of 9 hours 45 minutes, and the Norway in a Nutshell route with a fjord cruise, which takes about 12 hours depending on the time of year. At Myrdal you can change to the Flåm Railway.

Tip

If you want to see the mountain scenery, take a daytime train. Vy lists fares on the Bergen Line from NOK 359.

What may differ

If you drive the E16, the Lærdal Tunnel will be closed from 18:00 to 06:00 while an upgrade runs from 16 November 2026. A train drivers' strike was also cancelling several Vy services in October 2026, so check traffic updates before you travel.
