Is there a ferry from Oslo to Bergen?
Plane, train, bus and car, and where a boat fits in.
Short answer
There is no regular ferry between Oslo and Bergen: you can fly in under an hour, take the train in about 7 hours, or go by bus or car. If you want a boat on the way, Norway in a Nutshell includes a fjord cruise from Flåm to Gudvangen, and the whole trip takes about 12 hours.
Why
- Visit Bergen's guide to travelling from Oslo lists plane, train, express bus and car, with more than 20 flights a day and a train trip of about 7 hours.
- The same guide gives 9 hours 45 minutes for the express bus and 7–8 hours by car.
- The coastal route of Hurtigruten and Havila runs between Bergen and Kirkenes, north of Bergen, so it does not link Bergen with Oslo.
Details
Hurtigruten's North Cape Line cruise on MS Trollfjord, which sails between September and April, calls at Bergen on the way south from Tromsø to Oslo. It is sold as a cruise of several days, not as a ferry between the two cities.
Tip
For a scenic trip with a boat on it, take the Bergen Railway to Myrdal and continue with the Flåm Railway and the fjord cruise to Gudvangen.
