How do I get from Oslo to Stockholm: train, bus or car?

Short answer

The train is usually the fastest of the three from Oslo to Stockholm: SJ's direct trains take less than six hours, with five departures each way on weekdays. FlixBus needs at least 7 hours 15 minutes for its 533 km route, and Visit Sweden puts the drive at about six and a half hours, mostly on the E18.

Why

  1. SJ says there are five departures each way on weekdays, three on Saturdays and four on Sundays, and that the trains are run by Swedish SJ, not SJ Nord.
  2. FlixBus gives its quickest trip as 7 hours 15 minutes over 533 km, between Busterminalen Galleriet in Oslo and Cityterminalen in Stockholm.
  3. The E18 runs from Oslo via Ørje to the Swedish border at Töcksfors and on through Karlstad, Örebro and Västerås to Stockholm.

Details

SJ advertises under five hours on its high-speed trains and less than six hours in general, and you can pre-order lunch or dinner. Train tickets are sold by SJ in Sweden. FlixBus runs two departures a day from Stockholm to Oslo.

Tip

Before you book the train, check SJ's scheduled maintenance page for engineering work on the line on your travel date.
