How do I pay for a car ferry in Norway as a tourist?

Card payment, FerryPay, AutoPASS and invoices for foreign cars.

Short answer

As a tourist you can pay for a Norwegian car ferry by bank card to the crew, through FerryPay, or with an AutoPASS tag if your car has one. If you do none of these, the number plate is read at boarding and the vehicle owner receives an invoice with a fee. For foreign vehicles, EPASS24 handles these invoices.

Why

  1. AutoPASS for ferry, run by Statens vegvesen, gives 10 percent off with an approved tag and 40–50 percent with a prepayment agreement.
  2. FerryPay charges a registered credit or debit card the full fare automatically when the number plate is read, and the agreement should be set up by the day before the trip.
  3. AutoPASS for ferry states that EPASS24 handles invoicing and collection of unpaid ferry crossings for foreign vehicles.

Details

To pay manually, contact a crew member during the crossing; on Fjord1 ferries only card payment is possible, not cash. On Moss to Horten you pay by card or cash at the manual gate, and FerryPay and Epass24 cannot be used there. A full-price invoice goes to the registered owner of the vehicle, which for a rental car is the rental company.

Tip

If you will take several ferries, set up FerryPay at least a day before the first crossing; with a rental car, ask the rental company how ferry fares and invoice fees are charged.

What may differ

Some ferry routes in Trøndelag are not part of FerryPay, and Moss to Horten has its own payment rules.

Common misconception

You need a Norwegian AutoPASS tag to use car ferries in Norway.

What actually happens

You can pay the crew by card or use FerryPay; without a tag or agreement, the owner simply gets an invoice afterwards.
