What does 'buss for tog' mean, and how do I find out when it applies?
Why trains are replaced by buses, how long it lasts and where to find the information.
Short answer
Buss for tog means a rail replacement bus, used when trains cannot run because of planned engineering work or unplanned disruptions such as power failures. Check your trip in the Vy app or the journey planner on vy.no, and turn on notifications in the Vy app. During a strike, however, Vy says it cannot provide alternative transport.
Why
- Vy runs rail replacement buses when planned engineering works or unplanned disruptions, such as power failures or problems with the rails, stop the trains.
- In summer 2026 Vy ran buses instead of trains on some lines in Eastern Norway while Bane NOR worked on the railway, for example L1 between Oslo S and Lillestrøm from 27 June to 9 August.
- Vy says the buses usually take longer than the trains and advises allowing about 30–60 minutes extra.
Details
Information is also shown on departure boards and announced at the station. Bus departure times can differ from the normal train times, so search for the journey again in the Vy app or on vy.no. Remember to buy your ticket before you board, as for the train.
Tip
Turn on notifications in the Vy app for your trips, so you are told about buss for tog and other changes before you leave.
What may differ
How long it lasts depends on the work: in summer 2026 the line through the Gardermoen tunnel between Oslo S and Lillestrøm was closed for about six weeks, while in autumn 2025 Bane NOR worked mainly at weekends and in daytime outside rush hour.
Common misconception
There is always a replacement bus when a train is cancelled.
What actually happens
Vy says it cannot provide alternative transport during a strike, and some departures cancelled because of works run without alternative transport.
