What are the SAS hand luggage rules, and are they strict?
Carry-on and underseat bag, ticket types and bags that are too big.
Short answer
SAS carry-on bags may measure up to 55 x 40 x 23 cm and weigh up to 8 kg, and every ticket also includes a small underseat bag. Within Europe, the cheapest Economy Light fare includes only the underseat bag. SAS checks size and weight before departure, and bags over the limits go in the hold for a fee.
Why
- SAS's ticket overview lists one underseat bag of 40 x 30 x 15 cm, maximum 18 litres, on every fare from Economy Light to Business.
- Economy Standard, Economy Flex, Premium and Business include a carry-on bag of up to 8 kg on all flights, while Economy Light includes one only on flights outside Europe.
- SAS states on its carry-on page that it checks that carry-on bags meet the size and weight limits before departure.
Details
With Economy Light you can buy a carry-on bag. On domestic flights in Norway it costs NOK 139 up to 4 hours before departure, NOK 300 after that and NOK 450 at the airport. For the underseat bag SAS gives a size and a capacity of 18 litres, but no weight. A bag that is too big or heavy is placed in the hold, and a fee applies.
Tip
If you fly Economy Light and need a cabin bag, add it in advance: on domestic flights it costs NOK 139 more than 4 hours before departure, against NOK 450 at the airport.
What may differ
Allowances depend on ticket type, destination and EuroBonus level. On flights outside Europe, Economy Light also includes an 8 kg carry-on bag, and Premium and Business include two.
