Are SAS and Norwegian part of an airline alliance?
SAS in SkyTeam, Norwegian outside the alliances, and Widerøe.
Short answer
SAS has been a member of SkyTeam since September 2024, while Norwegian is not part of any global airline alliance. SAS was a founding member of Star Alliance in 1997 and left it on 31 August 2024. Norwegian's closest partner is Widerøe, which belongs to the Norwegian Group, and flights on both airlines can be combined in one booking.
Why
- SAS Group states on its own website that SAS has been a member of SkyTeam since September 2024.
- EuroBonus members earn points on SkyTeam airlines, a group that includes Air France, KLM, Delta and Virgin Atlantic, and can use them for award trips.
- Norwegian's partner page names Widerøe as its airline partner and calls it part of the Norwegian Group and its closest partner.
Details
Norwegian completed its purchase of Widerøe in January 2024. When a combined trip starts with a Norwegian flight, Norwegian's baggage rules apply, and you check in with the airline that operates the first flight. Norwegian is not on the member lists of oneworld or SkyTeam.
Tip
Flying Norwegian on to a small airport served by Widerøe? Book both flights together on norwegian.com or wideroe.no so they are in the same booking.
Common misconception
SAS is still a Star Alliance airline.
What actually happens
SAS left Star Alliance on 31 August 2024 and joined SkyTeam the next day, so EuroBonus points are now earned on SkyTeam airlines.
