Do students and young people get discounts on trains and buses in Norway?
Student and youth fares on Vy, Flytoget, Ruter and express buses.
Short answer
Students get discounts on many Norwegian trains and buses, such as half price on Flytoget and on Vy's longer train routes, if they show valid student ID. Vy, Ruter and NOR-WAY require students to be under 30. Young people also have their own fares: Flytoget gives half price at 16–20, and Vy buses sell youth tickets for 18–25.
Why
- Vy raised its student discount on single and period tickets on most longer train routes from 25 to 50 percent from 1 October 2024.
- From 1 February 2026, Vy's student discount on single tickets applies to students and pupils under 30.
- In Oslo, Ruter gives students under 30 a 40 percent discount, but only on the 30-day ticket.
Details
Flytoget gives half price to students and to young people aged 16–20 with valid ID, and children under 16 travel free with someone over 16. NOR-WAY Bussekspress gives a student discount to full-time students under 30. Ruter accepts a student card or student proof on your phone, but not the ANSA card.
Tip
Keep your student card or student proof on your phone ready for ticket checks, and buy student tickets in the operator's app before you board.
What may differ
Vy's student discount on buses is for students in higher education in Norway, with a separate rule for those studying abroad with an ISIC card; secondary school pupils use child or youth tickets instead.
