Is there a train from Oslo to Tromsø?
Where the railway ends, buses on to Tromsø and the faster options.
Short answer
There is no train to Tromsø: the nearest you can get by rail is Narvik, served by trains from Sweden, or Bodø, where Norway's network ends. From there you continue by bus. From Oslo you can fly instead: there are more than 10 flights a day, and the flight takes about 1 hour 50 minutes.
Why
- Visit Tromsø, the city's official tourist board, states plainly that there is no train service to Tromsø.
- Norway's railway network reaches from Kristiansand in the south to Bodø, above the Arctic Circle.
- The train from Stockholm and Kiruna runs to Narvik, and from there you can take a bus on to Tromsø.
Details
By rail from Oslo you would take the Dovre Line to Trondheim and the Nordland Line to Bodø, both run by SJ Nord, and then a bus. Visit Tromsø lists daily buses from Bodø and Fauske to Tromsø via Narvik, and long-distance buses link Tromsø with Alta, Narvik and Fauske all year. The Hurtigruten and Havila coastal ships also sail between Bergen and Kirkenes all year and call at Tromsø twice a day.
Tip
Plan a train and bus trip in the Entur travel planner: Visit Norway notes it is often the easiest and cheapest place to book, with no surcharge on the operators' prices.
What may differ
From Bergen the train only runs east to Oslo, so a rail journey towards Tromsø means changing in Oslo and Trondheim before the bus from Bodø or Fauske. The coastal ships from Bergen are a slower alternative that reach Tromsø without changes.
Common misconception
You can take the train all the way from Oslo to Tromsø.
What actually happens
Tromsø has no railway. The Norwegian network ends at Bodø, and the line to Narvik comes from Sweden, so the last part of the trip is always by bus, plane or boat.
