Can I take the train from Sweden to Narvik?
The night train from Stockholm, boarding in Kiruna or Abisko, and onward travel.
Short answer
You can take SJ's night train from Stockholm to Narvik, which runs daily via Kiruna and Abisko and takes about eighteen and a half hours. Visit Narvik lists departure from Stockholm Central at 18:08 and arrival in Narvik at 12:40 the next day. From December 2026 Trafikverket has contracted SJ to run one daily return Stockholm-Narvik train.
Why
- Visit Narvik says the night train is operated by SJ and covers about 1,456 kilometres in about 18.5 hours.
- Trafikverket, the Swedish Transport Administration, has given SJ the contract for night trains to Upper Norrland from December 2026 to December 2028, with one daily return Stockholm-Narvik.
- Visit Norway describes the Norwegian rail network as running from Kristiansand in the south to Bodø, so the rail link to Narvik comes from Sweden.
Details
Kiruna and Abisko are stops on the same night train, so you can board there for the last part of the trip. Visit Narvik says the views on the historic Ofoten Line are especially good between Kiruna and Narvik. Tickets are sold on SJ's website, and from Narvik you continue to Tromsø by bus, as there is no train to Tromsø.
Tip
Book early for the peak season, as Visit Narvik advises, and check the timetable for your exact travel date.
What may differ
The times above come from Visit Narvik. A new contract period starts in December 2026, so departure and arrival times may change.
