How do trains work in Norway, and which companies run them?
Operators, routes, tickets and where the network ends.
Short answer
Several companies run Norway's trains, including Vy, SJ Nord, Go-Ahead Nordic and Flytoget, on a network from Kristiansand in the south to Bodø above the Arctic Circle. You can buy tickets on Entur, which adds no surcharge, or on each operator's website or app. Bane NOR runs and maintains the railway itself.
Why
- Vy runs the local trains around Oslo and regional lines such as the Dovre and Bergen lines, according to Visit Norway.
- Go-Ahead Nordic runs the lines from Oslo to Stavanger, including the Sørland, Arendal and Jæren lines, while SJ Nord runs the Nordland, Dovre, Rauma and Røros lines.
- Bane NOR is in charge of operations, maintenance and construction of railways throughout Norway.
Details
Visit Norway says it is often easiest and cheapest to book with Entur, and suggests looking for low fare tickets. Flytoget only runs between the Oslo area and Oslo Airport. The Flåm Railway, one of the world's steepest railway lines, connects with the Bergen Railway at Myrdal.
Tip
Book long-distance trips early and look for low fare tickets on Entur or in the operator's app.
What may differ
The Norwegian network runs north to Bodø, and there is no train service to Tromsø: the nearest station is in Narvik, served by trains from Sweden.
