How do I get to Senja from Tromsø?
The Brensholmen ferry, express boats, buses and the road via Finnsnes.
Short answer
From Tromsø you reach Senja by the year-round car ferry from Brensholmen to Botnhamn, by express boat to Finnsnes, or by road over the bridge at Finnsnes. Senja is mainland Norway's second largest island and lies in Troms. The ferry cannot be booked in advance, and Visit Senja says payment is made with an AutoPASS tag.
Why
- Visit Senja describes the Botnhamn to Brensholmen ferry as year-round with daily departures, and says it is not possible to reserve a place in advance.
- Svipper's 2026 timetable for route 181 has seven departures each way from Monday to Thursday, the first leaving Brensholmen at 08:45 and the last at 20:45.
- Senja has a road bridge to the mainland between Silsand and Finnsnes on county road 86, according to Store norske leksikon.
Details
Express boat line 2 runs Tromsø, Finnsnes, Brøstadbotn, Engenes and Harstad, and tickets must be bought in the Svipper app. From Finnsnes there are daily buses to Tromsø and to villages around Senja. Drivers coming along the E6 turn onto road 855 at Buktamoen in Målselv towards Finnsnes. In winter, Visit Senja lists the Senja Direct bus between Tromsø and Senja from 15 December to 31 March, with tickets bought at least a day ahead.
Tip
Passenger cars have priority on the last ferry of the day, but there is no booking, so arrive early in summer, when Svipper adds extra departures.
What may differ
From mid-May to late September a summer ferry also links Gryllefjord on Senja with Andenes in Vesterålen, which is useful if you continue south.
