How do I switch or cancel my mobile plan in Norway?
Number porting, notice periods, binding periods and changing plans.
Short answer
To switch operator and keep your number, order a new plan from the new provider and give your number, without cancelling the old plan yourself. The old operator must then move the number by the end of the next working day after a valid request. To cancel without switching, contact your operator, but you then lose the number.
Why
- Nkom says that when you switch you should not cancel with your current provider, but order a new plan elsewhere and give your number at the same time.
- If you cancel the old subscription yourself, you lose the right to keep your number, according to Nkom.
- Telia says moving a number normally takes 5 working days with a physical SIM card and at least 9 hours with an eSIM.
Details
Outside a binding period you can cancel at any time, and providers may not bind private customers for more than 12 months. Telenor charges the monthly fee for a mobile plan until the end of the month in which you cancel. To move to another plan with the same operator, Telenor customers choose Bytt abonnement on Mine Sider, and only the owner of the number can do this. If the operator changes the terms, for example by raising the price, you can cancel at no extra cost from the date the change takes effect.
Tip
Check whether you are still in a binding period before you switch, since the breach fee normally depends on how long is left of the agreement.
What may differ
Home broadband, TV and fixed phone follow other notice rules: at Telenor the notice period is one month, counted from the first day of the following month.
Common misconception
You must cancel your old plan before you can switch to a new operator.
What actually happens
If you cancel the old plan yourself, you lose the right to keep the number. The new provider arranges the switch, and both Telia and Telenor say the old plan is ended for you.
