How much cash can you deposit or withdraw at a Norwegian bank?

Limits in the shop scheme, the banks' duty and questions about large sums.

Short answer

Through the banks' shared cash service in shops you can deposit up to NOK 20,000 and withdraw up to NOK 10,000, using a BankAxept card and PIN. Every bank must also make sure its customers can deposit and withdraw cash. For large or unusual amounts, the bank may ask where the money comes from and request documents.

Why

  1. Since 1 October 2022, each bank must make sure its customers can deposit and withdraw cash, either itself or through agreements with other providers.
  2. DNB lists limits of NOK 20,000 for deposits and NOK 10,000 for withdrawals in Kontanttjenester i butikk, available in about 1,460 NorgesGruppen shops.
  3. Anti-money laundering rules require banks to know where customers' money comes from, and DNB says it often asks for documentation of unusual transactions.

Details

In the shop scheme, deposits are free for private customers, while DNB charges NOK 10 per withdrawal for customers over 18. Large cash withdrawals are among the activities a bank may look into more closely. Inherited money and the sale of property are examples DNB gives of perfectly natural explanations.

Tip

If you plan to deposit or withdraw a large sum, contact your bank first and have documents ready that show where the money comes from, such as a sales contract or inheritance papers.

What may differ

Business customers pay NOK 75 per deposit and NOK 10 per withdrawal in the shop scheme.
