Can I withdraw cash at the checkout in a Norwegian supermarket?

Cash at the till: limits, fees and which cards work.

Short answer

You can withdraw up to NOK 10,000 in cash at the checkout in about 1,460 NorgesGruppen shops, such as Kiwi, Meny and Spar, using a BankAxept card and PIN. You do not need to buy anything, and the service is called Kontanttjenester i butikk. DNB charges customers over 18 NOK 10 per withdrawal.

Why

  1. Kontanttjenester i butikk is a shared solution from the banks for depositing and withdrawing cash in grocery shops.
  2. DNB lists a withdrawal limit of NOK 10,000 and a deposit limit of NOK 20,000 in the scheme.
  3. BankAxept says both private and business customers can withdraw and deposit cash using the payment terminal.

Details

You can take out cash together with your shopping or as a pure withdrawal. You need your card and PIN each time, and DNB says Apple Pay and tapping with Vipps also work. DNB adds that from 25 October a cash withdrawal combined with a purchase costs NOK 10.

Tip

Check your own bank's price list before you withdraw, because the fees quoted here are DNB's.

What may differ

The service only works with a bank card marked BankAxept, Norway's domestic card system, so a card without that logo cannot be used. Visitors without such a card can use cash machines, which are found in towns and cities.
