Can I buy or use cryptocurrency in Norway?
MiCA rules, licensed providers, tax and risk.
Short answer
You can buy and own cryptocurrency in Norway, and since 1 July 2025 crypto services have been regulated by the EU MiCA rules through the Crypto-Assets Act. Providers need authorisation, so Finanstilsynet advises checking the register first. All income from crypto is taxable and must be reported in your tax return.
Why
- Finanstilsynet states that the Crypto-Assets Act has applied in Norway from 1 July 2025, and Norges Bank notes that the European rules apply in Norway through this act.
- Crypto-asset service providers need authorisation from Finanstilsynet, and AK Jensen Norway AS became the first Norwegian firm authorised under MiCA, from 2 February 2026.
- Skatteetaten says all income from virtual assets is taxable, and that gains, income or wealth in crypto must be entered in your tax return.
Details
Crypto is not legal tender in Norway: Norges Bank lists only krone notes and coins as legal tender. Finanstilsynet warns that crypto investments carry very high risk, that you can lose the whole investment and that you cannot count on compensation schemes. It also warns of many fake crypto projects and scam attempts.
Tip
Before you use an exchange or broker, check ESMA's MiCA register or Finanstilsynet's register that it is authorised, and which services the authorisation covers.
