What currency does Norway use?

The krone, euros, cards, phone payments and cash.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Norway uses its own currency, the Norwegian krone (NOK), and shops rarely accept euros or other foreign money. Debit and credit cards are accepted almost everywhere, and many places also take Apple Pay and Google Pay. Banknotes come in 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 kroner, and coins in 1, 5, 10 and 20 kroner.

Why

  1. Visit Norway says foreign currency is rarely accepted, so you need Norwegian kroner if you want to pay in cash.
  2. Norges Bank issues all notes and coins, and today's banknotes belong to series VIII, introduced between 2017 and 2019.
  3. Since 1 October 2024, staffed shops that sell to consumers must let you pay in cash when the amount is NOK 20,000 or less.

Details

You will find cash machines in towns and cities, and in most rural areas there is at least one place to withdraw money. It is still a good idea to carry a little cash for small purchases. No one is obliged to accept more than 25 coins of each denomination in one payment.

Tip

If a card terminal offers to charge you in your home currency, choose kroner: DNB's travel advice is that paying in the local currency gives a better price.

Common misconception

You can pay with euros in Norway.

What actually happens

Norway uses the krone, and foreign currency is rarely accepted. Pay by card or bring Norwegian kroner.
