Do Norway, Sweden and Denmark use the same currency?
Three different krone currencies, their values and the euro question.
Short answer
Norway, Sweden and Denmark each use their own currency: the Norwegian krone (NOK), the Swedish krona (SEK) and the Danish krone (DKK). Their values differ: in 2025, 100 Swedish kronor cost on average NOK 105.88 and 100 Danish kroner NOK 157. Euros are generally not accepted in cash in Sweden.
Why
- Norges Bank's averages for 2025 were NOK 105.88 per 100 Swedish kronor and NOK 157 per 100 Danish kroner.
- Danmarks Nationalbank keeps the Danish krone stable around a central rate of DKK 7.46038 per euro, a fixed exchange rate policy pursued since the early 1980s.
- Visit Sweden says the Swedish krona is the official currency and that euros and other foreign currencies are generally not accepted in cash.
Details
Visit Denmark lists Danish banknotes of 50, 100, 200 and 500 kroner, and some Danish businesses are cashless and take only cards or mobile payments such as MobilePay. In Sweden, Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted. Norwegian Vipps users can pay businesses in Denmark and Finland using the business's MobilePay number.
Tip
On a trip through all three countries, plan to pay by card: Visit Sweden says carrying large amounts of cash in Sweden is not necessary.
What may differ
Denmark keeps its krone stable against the euro, but you still pay in Danish kroner; cash is accepted in most places.
Common misconception
Norway, Sweden and Denmark share one Scandinavian krone.
What actually happens
Each country issues its own currency with its own value: in 2025, 100 Danish kroner cost on average NOK 157.
