Can I use Norwegian kroner in Sweden?
Cash, cards, Vipps and the currency choice at Swedish terminals.
Short answer
As a rule you cannot pay with Norwegian kroner in Sweden: the currency there is the Swedish krona (SEK), and foreign cash is generally not accepted. Many shops, restaurants and museums prefer or only accept card or mobile payments, so a Norwegian bank card is the simplest option. Cash can be exchanged at offices such as Forex or Tavex.
Why
- The Swedish krona has been Sweden's official currency since 1873, and Sweden has not adopted the euro even though it is an EU member.
- Visit Sweden says euros and other foreign currencies are generally not accepted in cash transactions.
- Nordea lists Sweden among the countries where card terminals most often offer to charge Norwegian cards in Norwegian kroner (dynamic currency conversion).
Details
When a Swedish terminal asks whether to pay in NOK or SEK, choose SEK: DNB writes that if you pay in Norwegian kroner, the shop decides the exchange rate. You can also tap with Vipps in Sweden. Sending money with Vipps to someone in another Nordic country costs 4% of the amount.
Tip
If you need Swedish cash, ATMs, called Bankomat or Uttagsautomat, are readily available in Swedish cities and towns.
