Can I pay bills and invoices with a credit card in Norway?
How it works, what it costs and which bills are excluded.
Short answer
Yes, banks such as SpareBank 1 and Bank Norwegian let you pay bills with a credit card, but it costs more than an ordinary card purchase. Bank Norwegian charges interest from the first day on bill payments, and SpareBank 1 charges NOK 25 plus 1% of the bill. SpareBank 1 does not allow payments to Skatteetaten by credit card.
Why
- Bank Norwegian calculates interest from the first day when you pay a bill with the card, unlike ordinary purchases with up to 45 interest-free days.
- SpareBank 1 charges NOK 25 plus 1% of the bill when you pay it with its Mastercard credit card.
- SpareBank 1 states that you cannot pay Skatteetaten, the Norwegian Tax Administration, with a credit card.
Details
With SpareBank 1 you go to payments in the online bank and choose the credit card as the account to pay from, and you need available credit on the card. In the Bank Norwegian app you open the credit card tab and tap 'Betal'. Bill payments do not earn bonus points at Bank Norwegian.
Tip
Use the credit card for a bill only when you need a short delay, and plan the repayment: Bank Norwegian says the solution is not suited to fixed invoices.
What may differ
Fees, interest and which bills can be paid differ from bank to bank, so check the terms for your own card.
Common misconception
Paying a bill with a credit card gives you the same interest-free period as shopping.
What actually happens
At Bank Norwegian interest runs from the first day on bill payments, while ordinary card purchases have up to 45 interest-free days.
