When and how do I pay my credit card bill in Norway?
Due dates, minimum payments, interest and how to pay.
Short answer
With a Norwegian credit card you get an invoice once a month and must pay at least the minimum by the due date, or the full amount to avoid interest. Nordea, DNB and Bank Norwegian set the minimum at 3.5% of the balance. You can pay through eFaktura or directly in your online or mobile bank.
Why
- SpareBank 1, Nordea and DNB all offer up to 45 days of interest-free credit on card purchases, depending on when in the billing period you buy.
- The minimum is 3.5% of what you owe at Nordea (at least NOK 250), DNB (at least NOK 200) and Bank Norwegian (at least NOK 300).
- Any amount left unpaid after the due date carries interest until it is repaid.
Details
DNB produces the invoice about 15 days before the due date. Ordering eFaktura in your online bank avoids paper invoice fees; Nordea, for example, charges NOK 15 for a paper invoice. In the SpareBank 1 mobile bank you can also pay money into the card at any time, not only when the invoice arrives.
Tip
Pay the full balance, not just the minimum, by the due date: it is the only way to keep your purchases interest-free.
What may differ
Terms differ between banks and cards, so the minimum amount, interest-free period and fees in your own card agreement are what count.
Common misconception
If you pay the minimum amount, you do not pay interest.
What actually happens
The minimum only covers part of the balance. Interest runs on everything you leave unpaid until it is repaid.
