Can I pay with euros or US dollars in Norway?

Foreign currency, legal tender and how to pay instead.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Euros and US dollars are rarely accepted in Norway, because the country uses its own currency, the Norwegian krone (NOK), and only kroner are legal tender. Debit and credit cards are accepted almost everywhere, and there are cash machines in towns and cities. If a card terminal offers to charge you in euros or dollars, choose kroner.

Why

  1. Under section 3-5 of the Central Bank Act, banknotes and coins issued by Norges Bank are legal tender.
  2. Visit Norway says foreign currency is rarely accepted, so you need Norwegian kroner if you want to pay in cash.
  3. Since 1 October 2024, staffed shops must let consumers pay with legal tender for amounts up to NOK 20,000.

Details

FOREX Norge has currency exchange shops in Oslo, Bergen and Stavanger, and many places accept Apple Pay and Google Pay. Visit Norway still suggests carrying a little cash for small purchases.

Tip

Choose kroner when the terminal offers your home currency: N26 and DNB both advise paying in the local currency to get the better rate.

Common misconception

Shops in tourist areas take euros and dollars anyway.

What actually happens

Visit Norway says foreign currency is rarely accepted, so plan to pay by card or in kroner, also in tourist areas.
