How do I pay with my phone or smartwatch in Norway?
Apple Pay, Google Pay, Garmin Pay and tapping with Vipps.
Short answer
In Norway you add a bank card to Apple Pay, Google Pay, Garmin Pay or Vipps and hold your phone or watch to the card terminal. Visit Norway says many places accept phone payments such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. Vipps works for tapping on phones, but not on smartwatches.
Why
- Visit Norway says debit and credit cards are accepted almost everywhere, and many places also accept Google Pay and Apple Pay.
- DNB says you can add all its contactless Visa and Mastercard cards to Garmin Pay, and that there are no fees for paying with it.
- Vipps confirms that tapping with Vipps on a smartwatch is not possible.
Details
On an iPhone with Face ID, double-click the side button, confirm with Face ID or your passcode and hold the top of the phone near the reader. On an Apple Watch, double-click the side button and hold the display near the reader. With Garmin Pay you wake the watch, choose Garmin Pay and hold it over the terminal. To tap with Vipps, double-press the side button and unlock an iPhone, or simply unlock an Android phone, and hold it to the terminal.
Tip
If you tap with Vipps, set it as the default payment app under Kontoer og kort in the app, so you do not have to open Vipps before each payment.
What may differ
Which cards you can add depends on your bank and the card. DNB, for example, says you need a Norwegian mobile number for Garmin Pay, and Vipps needs a card from a bank that supports tapping.
