PayPal, Venmo and how people in Norway pay.

Short answer

PayPal works in Norway for online shopping and sending money, but Venmo cannot be used here, because you cannot sign in to Venmo from outside the US. In shops, most people pay by card or phone, and mobile payments made up 37% of in-store payments in March 2026, according to Norges Bank.

Why

  1. PayPal has a Norwegian site, paypal.com/no, where you can add debit cards, credit cards and bank accounts and send or request money.
  2. Venmo's help centre states that you will not be able to sign in to your Venmo account if you are not currently in the US.
  3. Venmo users can still pay PayPal users in Norway, which is on Venmo's list of markets for cross-platform payments, with an international limit of USD 2,500 per transaction.

Details

The Norwegian app for paying friends is Vipps, but it requires BankID, a Norwegian phone number, a Norwegian Visa card or Mastercard and an account in a Norwegian bank. Tip

If a friend in the US uses Venmo, they can send money to your PayPal account in Norway, but international payment fees may apply.

What may differ

If you are outside the US for a long time, Venmo suggests contacting its support team or opening an account with its parent company PayPal.
