Do I need a PIN to pay by card in Norway?

PIN limits, contactless and paying by phone.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

In Norway you enter your PIN for card payments over NOK 500, while smaller contactless payments usually go through without it, though the terminal can still ask for it. DNB caps the accumulated amount without a PIN at NOK 700. With Google Pay or Apple Pay you approve on your phone instead of entering the card PIN.

Why

  1. Nordea and DNB both set a limit of NOK 500 per contactless payment in Norway, and above that you tap the card and enter your PIN.
  2. Nordea notes that the terminal may now and then ask you to insert the card and enter the PIN for security reasons, even for small amounts.
  3. DNB says each country has agreed its own maximum amount per contactless payment, so the limits abroad differ from Norway's NOK 500.

Details

At DNB you do not need a PIN to pay with Google Pay, but for amounts over NOK 500 the phone must be unlocked. On an iPhone with Face ID you start Apple Pay by double-clicking the side button. Norges Bank recommends using physical cards regularly with chip and PIN.

Tip

Make sure you know your card's PIN before you travel to Norway, since larger purchases and some terminals will ask for it.
