Can I use Revolut, Wise or N26 in Norway?

Accounts, cards, currency costs and where these cards fall short.

Short answer

Revolut, Wise and N26 all work in Norway, and people living in Norway can open accounts and get cards from all three providers. Revolut says 500,000 people in Norway use it. N26 gives you a euro account with a German IBAN and a Mastercard debit card. Vipps, however, requires a Norwegian card and bank account.

Bank transfers and exchange rates a payment card tapping a terminal, a phone with a simple payment icon and one krone coin

Why

  1. According to Revolut's Norwegian website, Revolut Bank UAB is licensed by the European Central Bank and regulated by the Bank of Lithuania.
  2. Wise lists Norway among the EEA countries where you can get a Wise card.
  3. N26 accepts customers living in Norway, with an account in euros and a German IBAN.

Details

Payments in Norway are in kroner, so unless you hold kroner, your provider converts the amount: N26, for example, adds a 1.7% markup on cash withdrawals in foreign currencies. Visit Norway notes that post offices and some grocery shops do not accept foreign credit cards.

Tip

When the terminal asks whether to pay in kroner or your account currency, choose kroner, as N26 recommends the local currency for the best exchange rate.

What may differ

The banks' cash service in shops, Kontanttjenester i butikk, needs a card marked BankAxept, so check whether your card has that logo.
