Is Vipps safe, and how do I avoid Vipps scams?

Safeguards, common scams, blocking and what to do if you are tricked.

Short answer

Vipps has built-in safeguards such as BankID registration and an SMS each time the app is installed on a new device, but scammers still try to trick users into paying. Vipps, the police and your bank will never ask you to send money to a private person or a safe account. You can block people in the app.

Why

  1. Vipps sends an SMS every time the app is installed on a new device, so you can act at once if it was not you.
  2. Vipps says it will never ask for PIN codes, card or account details, or require you to update payment details through a link in an SMS or email.
  3. Scammers pose as the police, your bank or Vipps on the phone, and hacked social media accounts are used to ask friends and family for money.

Details

To block someone, tap the profile icon at the top right, choose Sikkerhet og personvern (Security and privacy), then Blokkerte personer (Blocked people), and add the person. After that, neither of you can send money or messages to the other. If you think you have been scammed, contact Vipps at once, contact your bank if you shared BankID or card details, and report it to your local police station.

Tip

If a friend asks for money on social media, check with them another way first: Vipps advises not to transfer money until you have confirmation.

Common misconception

An SMS from Vipps asking you to secure your account is genuine.

What actually happens
