What is a KID number when you pay a bill in Norway?

What KID means, how it works and what to check.

Short answer

A KID number is a customer reference of up to 25 digits on a Norwegian bill that identifies who is paying and what the payment is for. KID stands for kundeidentifikasjon, or customer identification. You enter it when you pay in your online bank, and the recipient can then register the payment without manual work.

Why

  1. The user manual for Norwegian incoming payment services from Mastercard Payment Services says a KID can have up to 25 digits and identifies the payer and what the payment concerns.
  2. The last digit is a check digit calculated with modulus 10 or modulus 11, and the payer's bank validates the KID and may reject a payment with the wrong one.
  3. Because the KID identifies the payment, the recipient avoids registering it by hand and can update its customer accounts correctly.

Details

The KID is printed on the invoice or giro form in a field marked for customer identification, and you type it in with the payment in your online bank. If a company may later offer AvtaleGiro, the automatic payment service, its customer number has to be part of the KID. This means the KID often links the payment both to you and to a specific bill.

Tip

Copy the KID exactly from the bill you are paying. If your bank rejects it, check for a missing or swapped digit before you contact the company that sent the bill.
