What is Vipps?
What Vipps does, what it costs and who can use it.
Short answer
Vipps is a Norwegian payment app, launched in 2015, for sending money to friends, paying in shops and online, and paying bills. Sending money is free up to NOK 5,000 to the same person in 24 hours, and paying businesses is free. To use it you need BankID, a Norwegian mobile number and a Norwegian bank card.
Why
- Vipps MobilePay says Vipps launched for everyone in Norway in 2015 and that the company has more than 12 million users.
- Above NOK 5,000 to the same private person within 24 hours, Vipps charges 1 per cent of the amount, and sending money abroad costs 4 per cent.
- In shops you can tap your phone against the card terminal, and you do not need to open the app first.
Details
Payments to businesses, online shops, clubs and associations are free whatever the amount. A full profile from age 15 needs a Norwegian personal number or D-number, a registered address in Norway, an account in a Norwegian bank and an email address. Children under 15 can use Vipps through a profile that a parent creates.
Tip
Keep transfers to one person at NOK 5,000 or less within 24 hours to avoid the 1 per cent fee.
What may differ
Visitors without BankID and a Norwegian bank card do not meet the requirements for a Vipps profile, so they pay by card or cash instead.
