Who owns Vipps, and when was it launched?
The history of Vipps, its owners and the merger with MobilePay.
Short answer
Vipps launched in Norway in 2015 and is now run by Vipps MobilePay AS, owned by Norwegian banks such as DNB and SpareBank 1 together with Danske Bank. Vipps was part of the DNB Group until 2017, when it became a separate company. The EU Commission cleared its merger with MobilePay in October 2022.
Why
- When Vipps became a separate company in 2017, DNB owned about 52 per cent, the SpareBank 1 alliance 25 per cent, independent savings banks 12 per cent, the Eika alliance 10 per cent and Sparebanken Møre 1 per cent.
- Under the 2022 merger, Danske Bank was to own 27.8 per cent directly and Vipps Holding, owned by Norwegian banks including DNB, SpareBank 1, Eika and Balder, 72.2 per cent.
- Vipps MobilePay says MobilePay was launched in Denmark in 2013 and that the company now has more than 12 million users.
Details
Vipps MobilePay has about 600 employees and offices in Norway, Denmark and Finland. Private users send money to friends for free up to a limit, while businesses pay a fee per transaction, for example 1.75 per cent for a Vippsnummer.
Tip
If you run a business, check the public price list first: Vipps MobilePay says other price levels can be agreed on request.
