How do I address an envelope in Norway?

Line order, the sender, post boxes and letters abroad.

Short answer

In Norway, write the recipient's name first, then the street address, and put the postcode and town on the bottom line, as in 0161 Oslo. Write the address in the middle of the envelope, and the sender's details preferably at the top of the back. On letters abroad, add the country name on the last line.

Why

  1. Posten says that for all addresses the postcode and place name must always be on the bottom line.
  2. Posten's own example is Per Post, Storgata 15 A, 0161 Oslo: the name, the street with house number, then the postcode and place.
  3. Posten asks for the sender's name and address preferably at the top of the back; if they are on the front, the sender goes top left with the recipient just below.

Details

For a post office box, write Postboks with the number and the postcode, and add the name of the box facility if the town has several. Use c/o for someone living at another person's address. For letters abroad the country name must always be written; for countries with numeric postcodes, the country code goes first on the postcode line, followed by a hyphen, as in DK-5000 Odense.

Tip

If you use Posten's digital stamp for a letter within Norway, write the code clearly by hand in the top right corner of the envelope.

What may differ

Other countries have their own address formats. Posten notes that the postcode usually goes before the place name, as in 53225 Bonn, but the placement varies, so check the rules of the country you are writing to.
