How do I forward my mail when I move in Norway?

Permanent change of address, deadlines, parcels and Folkeregisteret.

Short answer

When you move in Norway, order a permanent address change from Posten, which forwards letters to your new address free of charge for 12 months. Order online at least four working days before the move. Parcels cost NOK 110 each to forward, and Posten can pass your new address on to Folkeregisteret.

Why

  1. Posten forwards letters sent through Posten free of charge for twelve months after a permanent address change, and forwarded post can take up to two extra working days.
  2. The service must be ordered at least four working days before the move online, or eight working days before if you order at a Posten outlet.
  3. Skatteetaten says the move must be reported to Folkeregisteret no earlier than 31 days before and no later than 8 days after moving, free of charge on skatteetaten.no or posten.no.

Details

Log in on Posten's form with BankID or one of the other options offered, or use the paper form available at post offices and Post i Butikk. You can choose to have Posten pass your new address to Folkeregisteret, and you then get a receipt from both. Newspapers and magazines are not forwarded on a permanent change. Parcels can be sent on to a new pickup point for extra postage, which you pay on collection.

Tip

Report the move on skatteetaten.no or posten.no rather than on paid third-party sites, which Skatteetaten says do not always pass the address on to Folkeregisteret.

What may differ

If you are moving only for a while, temporary forwarding costs NOK 300 for up to 60 days within Norway or NOK 400 abroad, then NOK 150 or NOK 200 per extra month. Items containing goods cannot be forwarded abroad because of customs declaration rules.
