How long do I have to collect a parcel in Norway?

Pickup points, Pakkeboks, extensions and holiday rules.

Short answer

Most parcels at a Posten pickup point must be collected within 7 days, which you can extend free of charge to 14 days in the Posten app. In a Pakkeboks you have 4 days, extendable to 7. Parcels not collected in time are sent back to the sender. Registered letters and Poste Restante wait 3 weeks.

Why

  1. Posten gives a 7-day collection deadline for parcels delivered to a pickup point, apart from Pakkeboks.
  2. The deadline can be extended free of charge from 7 to 14 days in the Posten app or by SMS, although some senders do not allow it.
  3. If the recipient does not collect the parcel within the deadline, it is returned to the sender.

Details

Letters too large for the mailbox, registered letters, insured letters (verdibrev) and Poste Restante have a 3-week deadline. Parcels with only a paper pickup notice, for example some parcels from abroad, still have 14 days. Parcels held because customs documents are missing have 14 days for a response before they are returned to the sender.

Tip

If you are travelling, extend the deadline in the Posten app as soon as you get the notice, since the extension is free but not possible for every parcel.

What may differ

Around holidays the rules change: parcels with a deadline between 15 and 31 July are returned on 1 August, and those due between 23 and 31 December are returned on the third working day after New Year.
