How do I pay the customs and VAT charge on a parcel in Norway?
Payment request, Vipps or card, and Posten's 2026 fees.
Short answer
When Posten clears a parcel from abroad, it sends a payment request through the Posten app, Digipost or a letter, and you pay with Vipps or card. You can also pay on Posten's website with the shipment number. Parcels for collection are released only after payment, while letterbox items arrive first and the bill follows.
Why
- Posten's 2026 fee for customs clearance is NOK 46 for parcels worth up to NOK 500, NOK 78 for NOK 500–3,000 and NOK 278 above NOK 3,000 or for restricted goods.
- Parcels from shops that collected VAT at checkout under the VOEC scheme carry no extra charges or fees when they arrive in Norway.
- Posten says digital payment requests are sent the same day and asks you to pay as soon as possible and within the stated deadline.
Details
To pay on the web, find the shipment number, open the shipment page and follow the link for import duties, which shows what has been cleared. You get a receipt in Norwegian and English after paying. The declaration needs your 11-digit national identity number, and you can give it straight to the carrier instead of the shop.
Tip
If the shop already charged Norwegian VAT at checkout and Posten asks for VAT again, contact the shop, since Posten says the refund must come from the store.
What may differ
If another carrier brings the parcel, that carrier clears it, may charge its own fee and sends its own payment instructions.
Common misconception
The clearance fee goes to Tolletaten.
What actually happens
The clearance fee is the carrier's charge for its work. Only the VAT and any customs duty go to the state.
