Can I ship online orders to a pickup point in Sweden?
The value limit, Norwegian VAT and how to declare goods.
Short answer
You can collect online orders at a pickup point in Sweden if the shop delivers there, and the goods then count towards your duty-free value limit in Norway. After more than 24 hours abroad the limit is NOK 6,000, on shorter trips NOK 3,000 once every 24 hours. Above that you must declare the goods and pay Norwegian VAT.
Why
- Tolletaten says that after more than 24 hours abroad you can bring goods worth up to NOK 6,000 into Norway without paying duties.
- On trips of 24 hours or less the limit is NOK 3,000, and it can be used only once within a 24-hour period.
- The value limit applies to the total value of the goods you have bought, while alcohol and tobacco have their own quotas.
Details
If the goods are worth more than the limit, you must declare them, and you can pay the duties when you go through the red zone at the border. Most goods carry 25 percent VAT, and some also carry customs duty. Tolletaten's app lets you check whether you are within the quota and declare goods.
Tip
Check the total in Tolletaten's app before you cross the border, so you know whether the order is within the limit and can declare it in the app if it is not.
What may differ
Whether a Swedish shop delivers to a pickup point for a customer who lives in Norway is up to the shop. If the parcel is sent on to Norway by post instead, the ordinary rules for online shopping from abroad apply, and VAT is due on all goods whatever their value.
Common misconception
If you collect the parcel in Sweden yourself, you never pay Norwegian VAT.
What actually happens
Only goods within the value limit are free of Norwegian VAT. Above NOK 6,000, or NOK 3,000 on short trips, you must declare the goods and pay.
