What is Post i Butikk, and where can I find one?

Posten's counters in shops and what they offer.

Short answer

Post i Butikk is a Posten counter inside a shop, usually a grocery store, and the nearest one is shown on Posten's online map. There you can collect and hand in parcels, return online purchases and buy packing materials. The concept started in 2001 and, according to Store norske leksikon, is found in more than 1,300 places.

Why

  1. Store norske leksikon says Post i Butikk was launched in 2001 and gave customers the same postal services in grocery shops, with longer opening hours than the ordinary post offices.
  2. Posten says that across the country there are Post Offices and Post in Stores that help with a range of services, including packing materials.
  3. Posten's help page says collecting a parcel from a Pakkeboks costs no more than having it sent to a Post i Butikk or post office.

Details

Parcels normally have to be collected within 7 days after they reach the pickup point, and some shipments have a 3-week deadline. In most cases you can let someone else collect a parcel by giving them access in the Posten app. Posten's map also shows parcel lockers and red post boxes.

Tip

Set your nearest Post i Butikk as your favourite pickup place in the Posten app.

What may differ

Post offices run by Posten itself also stock an extended range, such as mailboxes, office supplies and books, which a Post i Butikk counter may not carry.

Common misconception

Norway has no post offices any more.

What actually happens

Posten still lists its own Post Offices alongside Post i Butikk counters across the country.
