How do I claim compensation for a delayed or cancelled flight from Norway?
EU rules, compensation amounts, how to claim and where to complain next.
Short answer
Send a claim to the airline first: flights from Norway follow EU air passenger rules, which give EUR 250, 400 or 600 for long delays and late cancellations. You qualify after an arrival delay of 3 hours or more, unless the cause was extraordinary. If the airline refuses, you can take the case to Transportklagenemnda.
Why
- The EU's Your Europe portal states that EU air passenger rules also apply to flights to and from Iceland, Norway and Switzerland.
- The standard amounts are EUR 250 for flights up to 1,500 km, EUR 400 for longer flights within the EEA and other flights of 1,500–3,500 km, and EUR 600 for all other flights.
- Forbrukerrådet points out that it is the airline that must prove a delay was caused by extraordinary circumstances.
Details
For a cancellation you are generally entitled to compensation if you were told less than 14 days before departure. Norwegian asks passengers to claim expenses and compensation through norwegian.com and to keep original itemised receipts, and it halves the amount if a new flight gets you there within a set time of the original arrival. While you wait, the airline must cover food and drink once the delay passes 2, 3 or 4 hours, depending on the flight distance.
Tip
Note the actual arrival time at your final destination and keep boarding passes and receipts, then send the claim in writing so you have a record if the case goes further.
What may differ
A flight into Norway from outside the EU and EEA is only covered if an EU or EEA airline operates it. Flights leaving Norway are covered whatever the airline.
Common misconception
A technical fault always counts as an extraordinary circumstance, so the airline never has to pay.
What actually happens
Your Europe says most technical problems found during maintenance, or caused by poor maintenance, are not extraordinary circumstances.
