Can I get compensation if my train in Norway is delayed?

Delay thresholds, how to claim, extra costs and strikes.

Short answer

Vy refunds 50 per cent of the ticket price when a train is over 30 minutes late, or over an hour between Oslo and Bergen or Flåm and Myrdal. You claim in writing within three months, and you get nothing if you knew about the delay before buying. During a strike, Vy's travel guarantee does not apply.

Why

  1. Vy's customer service states the 30-minute and one-hour thresholds and the 50 per cent refund.
  2. Season tickets are refunded pro rata by the number of days they are valid, up to a maximum of 50 per cent of the price.
  3. Vy says section 6A of its Travel Guarantee does not apply in a strike, but passengers keep their rights under the Norwegian Rail Passenger Rights Regulations.

Details

If a delay or cancellation forces you to take other transport or pay other costs, Vy may refund them in full or in part, and you must document the expenses. Tickets bought in the Vy app or while logged in to vy.no are saved in your profile, which allows automatic processing. Tickets from Entur, Ruter or other companies are entered by hand in the form.

Tip

Keep receipts for taxis, buses or hotels you pay because of the delay, and send the claim soon after the trip rather than near the three-month limit.

What may differ

These are Vy's rules. SJ Nord and Go-Ahead Nordic run other lines, so check their conditions if you travel with them. Vy's strike notice, updated on 15 October 2026, says it cannot provide alternative transport during the train drivers' strike.
