Can I cancel or reverse a Vipps payment?
Revoking payments, wrong recipients and refunds.
Short answer
No, once you have approved a payment in Vipps you cannot cancel it, according to the Vipps user terms, although a refund is possible in some cases. Transfers between accounts are instant, and Vipps is not responsible if you enter the wrong recipient, number or amount. If you paid the wrong person, contact Vipps and the recipient quickly.
Why
- Section 19.3 of the Vipps user terms (version 1.4, 30 September 2026) says that once you have approved a payment, you cannot revoke it.
- An approved payment shows up at once in both the payer's and the recipient's app, and transfers from account to account happen immediately.
- Under the same terms, Vipps is not liable if the recipient, phone number or amount you entered is wrong, and anyone who receives money by mistake must tell Vipps as soon as possible.
Details
If Vipps itself makes a mistake with a payment, it must correct the error and cover your loss. Payments you did not authorise must be reported to Vipps as soon as possible and no later than 13 months after the payment. When a shop refunds a Vipps payment, the money goes back to the account you paid from, usually within 2–3 working days, but it can take up to 10 working days depending on the bank.
Tip
Check the recipient's name in the app before you confirm the payment. A payment to a phone number that is not registered with Vipps will not go through.
What may differ
A bill you have scheduled for its due date is different: you can delete it from the due-date register in your online or mobile bank before it is paid. For purchases from businesses, Vipps buyer protection may apply if you first contact the seller and make your claim within 60 days of paying.
Common misconception
A Vipps payment can be pulled back if you act quickly.
What actually happens
Approved Vipps payments cannot be revoked. The money comes back through the recipient, a refund from the seller or the cases where the Vipps terms give you a right to a refund.
