What does 'reservert' mean in Vipps?
Reserved payments, how long they last and hidden balances.
Short answer
In Vipps, 'reservert' means the money for a purchase is held in your account but not yet taken by the business. By regulation, a shop may not capture the payment until the product or service is ready to be delivered. If the order is cancelled, the business can release the reservation at once.
Why
- Vipps MobilePay's developer documentation states that, by regulation, a business must not capture a payment until the product or service is ready to be delivered.
- Reserve capture is the default, so a payment goes into the reserved state once you approve it, and the money only moves when the business captures it.
- In the Norwegian market a reservation can last up to 180 days, but banks often release it earlier: usually 5–7 days for Visa, 30 days for Mastercard and 7 days for BankAxept.
Details
Direct capture, where the money is taken at once, is meant for cases where the product or service is delivered immediately. Once a payment is captured, the transfer to the business can take a few days depending on the bank. If you cannot see your balance in Vipps at all, switch on Se saldo under Kontoer og kort: all Norwegian banks support it except Nordea and Næringsbanken.
Tip
If a reservation stays after an order was cancelled, contact the business first, since it is the business that releases the reservation.
