How do I return an item I bought online in Norway?
Deadlines, return postage, refunds and exceptions.
Short answer
When you buy online from a business, you can cancel by telling the seller within 14 days, counted from the day after you receive the item. Send the item back within 14 days of that notice. You pay the return postage if the seller told you so in advance, and the seller must refund you within 14 days.
Why
- Forbrukerrådet says you have two weeks to tell the seller that you are withdrawing, and the countdown starts the day after you receive the item.
- If you did not receive a completed withdrawal form (angrerettskjema), the deadline is extended to up to twelve months.
- The seller cannot charge a fee for the withdrawal, but you pay for the return if you were told this in advance.
Details
Forbrukerrådet advises sending the seller an e-mail saying that you are withdrawing, and attaching the withdrawal form the seller should have sent you. Return the item without undue delay and within 14 days of the notice. You are entitled to get back all the money you paid, and the standard terms for online sales give the seller 14 days at the most to refund it.
Tip
Send the return with tracking and keep the receipt, so you can show that the item went back in time.
What may differ
The right of withdrawal does not apply when you buy from a private person, or to items made to your specifications, fresh goods such as food and flowers, and sealed media or intimate products once opened. In a physical shop, the shop's own return policy applies.
Common misconception
You always have 14 days to return things you buy in a shop in Norway.
What actually happens
The right of withdrawal applies only to purchases outside a fixed shop, such as online or doorstep sales. In a shop, returns depend on the shop's own policy.
