Dentists in Skien: 8 clinics by Handelstorget, in Cappelens gate and in Telemarksvegen
Dentists in the centre of Skien are close together: most of the clinics on this page are within about 600 metres of the town hall, by the square Handelstorget, in Nedre Hjellegate and in Cappelens gate. One practice is north of the centre, closer to the railway station, and the public dental clinic stands apart in Telemarksvegen, just under two kilometres south-west of the town hall. The centre within a few hundred metres: Handelstorget, Nedre Hjellegate and Cappelens gate
- Henrik Ibsens gate 6 is less than a hundred metres from the town hall, on the third floor by Handelstorget.
- Nedre Hjellegate 2 and 9 are about 60 metres apart and 150 to 200 metres from Handelstorget.
- Cappelens gate 6, 15 and 17 are within 170 metres of each other, 400 to 600 metres north-west of the town hall.
- Adjunkt Arentz gate vest 3A is about 550 metres from the railway station.
The distances are straight lines between the address points in the Kartverket address register. The clinic by Handelstorget describes the way in itself: third floor, right opposite the Arkaden shopping centre (its website, read on 7 October 2026). The orthodontic clinic at Cappelens gate 15 is on the second floor, has entrances from both Cappelens gate and Lundegata, and lists a lift and electric door openers. For parking it points to Lietorvet.
If you drive to the public clinic, a temporary arrangement applies. The county writes that patient parking has been moved because of building work at Strøsenteret, and that you should follow the sign for visitor parking for the dental clinic right after the entrance at the roundabout (telemarkfylke.no, read on 7 October 2026).
The selection is small compared with the catalogue. The category Dental clinics has 48 cards in October 2026, and many of them are individual dentists at the same address: eight cards at Telemarksgata 12, seven in Cappelens gate and seven in Nedre Hjellegate. Opening hours: a long Wednesday, a long Thursday and weekends by appointment
- Wednesday until 19.00: the clinic at Nedre Hjellegate 2.
- Thursday until 17.00: the dentist at Cappelens gate 17, who closes at 14.00 on Friday.
- Saturday and Sunday: the practice in Adjunkt Arentz gate lists emergency cover by appointment.

We read the opening hours on the clinic websites and the county page on 7 October 2026. Most keep to 8.00 to 16.00. So does the clinic by Handelstorget, but its phone is answered for a shorter time: until 15.00 Monday to Thursday and until 13.00 on Friday. At Nedre Hjellegate 2 Wednesday lasts until 19.00. At Cappelens gate 17 the hours are 8.30 to 16.00 Monday to Wednesday, until 17.00 on Thursday and until 14.00 on Friday, and the orthodontic clinic at number 15 closes at 15.30 on Friday.
The practice in Adjunkt Arentz gate lists 8.00 to 15.30 on weekdays, afternoons by appointment and emergency cover by appointment on Saturday and Sunday. The catalogue card gives 7.30 to 16.00 for it: trust the website. The websites of the clinics at Nedre Hjellegate 9 and Cappelens gate 6 could not be opened when we checked: their cards show 8.00 to 16.00 and 8.00 to 15.30 on weekdays.
The public clinic in Telemarksvegen is open from 8.00 to 15.00 Monday to Friday, and its phone is answered from 8.00 to 9.30 and from 12.15 to 14.00.
Booking, referral, urgent help and payment

Four of the clinics have a booking link on their website. The orthodontic clinic writes that you must bring a referral from the public dental service to the first consultation, that the referral is valid for 24 months, and that parents must come with patients under 18.
Urgent help outside office hours does not go through a public service. Telemark county writes that from 1 February 2026 it no longer has a public emergency dental service (telemarkfylke.no, updated 30 June 2026, read on 7 October 2026). In the evening, at weekends and on public holidays the county asks you to contact a private dentist, and the out-of-hours medical service (legevakten) if you cannot reach one. Three of the private clinics here mention urgent help on their own pages: the clinic by Handelstorget, the clinic at Nedre Hjellegate 2 and the practice in Adjunkt Arentz gate. Whether there is a free slot the same day, you only know once you have called.
Who pays is set out on helsenorge.no (last updated 1 July 2026, read on 7 October 2026). As a main rule adults cover the bill themselves, and each dentist sets prices freely. In the public dental service treatment is free from 0 to 18 years, except orthodontics, and those who turn 19 to 28 in the year of treatment pay 25 per cent of the cost. For urgent help the county writes that you pay the dentist directly.

The clinic at Nedre Hjellegate 2 is open until 19.00 on Wednesdays, and the dentist at Cappelens gate 17 until 17.00 on Thursdays (the clinic websites, read on 7 October 2026). The practice in Adjunkt Arentz gate gives afternoon appointments by arrangement.
Not a public one: since 1 February 2026 Telemark county has no public emergency dental service (tannlegevakt). Outside opening hours the county asks you to try a private dentist and then the out-of-hours medical service (legevakten), and one practice on this page lists emergency cover by appointment at weekends.
